Undoubtedly, most people across the globe are facing a challenging situation due to COVID-19. The pandemic made them realize the value of getting insurance protection for themselves and their family members, especially those concerning medical and healthcare. COVID-19 has turned many people into more health-conscious individuals.

Elderlies and disabled individuals are among the group of people who are more susceptible to acquiring illnesses. Hence, these vulnerable sectors need to ensure that they get sufficient healthcare protection. When you grow old, sometimes, medical care can become a relatively expensive service.
What Are Medicare Supplements?
Medicare Supplements is a type of insurance policy that allows policyholders to fill in the gaps of Medicare Parts A and B or the so-called Original Medicare. In other words, it provides additional coverages for healthcare and medical services not covered by Original Medicare. That is why it is called supplement because it is an add-on to your existing coverage from Parts A and B.

The policy can pay the excess healthcare and medical expenses no longer covered by Original Medicare, such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. If you require medical care and you have Original Medicare and Medical Supplements, the Original Medicare will pay the allowable amount while Medical Supplements will also pay its share.

Medical Supplements consist of nine plans: A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N.

Some Important Things About Medical Supplements
  1. Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage are not the same. These are two different kinds of healthcare insurance. Medicare Supplements are additional coverage for your existing Medicare Parts A and B. Meanwhile, Medicare Advantage is a substitute for Original Medicare.
  2. You are only allowed to get Medicare Supplements if you already have an existing Original Medicare insurance coverage.
  3. You cannot get Medicare Supplements if your policy is Medicare Advantage. You can only get it if you revert to Original Medicare.
  4. Medicare Supplements can only cover you. So, if you have a spouse, you can obtain a separate Medicare Supplements coverage for your spouse.
  5. Medicare Supplements Plan G is considered the best plan for new applicants.
  6. Since private insurance companies offer Medicare Supplements, you will pay your premiums for Medicare Supplements and Original Medicare separately.

Conclusion
In most cases, having Medicare Parts A and B might be insufficient to cover the medical and healthcare expenses of older and disabled persons. Hence, it is significant to get Medicare Supplements to have the maximum coverage that they might need. Always keep in mind that better healthcare will allow older and disabled persons to have better lives.
